09 spring- heather, anne
reflection and refraction

At this meeting we began to prepare for our lesson study presentations at
the Summer ’09 meeting. We reflected about what the most valuable part
was, and decided that the most valuable moments occurred while viewing
videos of ourselves. It’s the hardest to hear, but that gave the most impact.
Through focusing on video analysis we concluded that good video analysis
for true lesson study requires a specific, evidence-based, goal-oriented
question, which serves as a lens to watch the video. We decided that given
more time we would have been able to engage in more true lesson study
through viewing each other’s lessons.

While the lesson study itself did help us deal with video we both found that it
was really the National Board Certification process that really helped us
wrestle with video. We both found that the NBC portfolio helped us to refine
the quality of the video and our analysis. The framework provided by NBC
helped us to ask the hard questions that get to the heart of student learning.
