07 summer - katie p, kim, holly
types of chemical reactions
This was difficult because Katie B. and Dana were switching to physics, and Katie P. and Kim wanted to move into a more advanced topic like equilibrium, but I didn’t teach that. We decided then to take something that was essentially boring, routine, and unexciting to teach, and try to make it more fun, interesting and inquiry based. This led us to types of reactions. All 3 of us teach a slightly different mix of types of reactions, but we could essentially take the same lesson and use the parts we needed for that part of our curriculum and leave the rest out. Once we identified a topic we started creating probing questions based on common misconceptions we’d identified from our own classrooms. Carol and Anne were great in keeping us focused, helping to see things we hadn’t in misconceptions, and playing devil’s advocates. They really helped us clarify our thinking and prepare for potential pitfalls. This meeting was awesome, and in one meeting we already had a lesson that seemed better to begin with then what we ended with before. The thought of not having to lecture on this topic was pretty exciting for each of us.
