exothermic and endothermic processes

Holly’s comments -

So I still haven’t taught the lesson, but Katie came with great resources and ideas. She had pre and post worksheets, student labs, and video. Her number one take away: Students couldn’t come up with a concise procedure to guide them through the inquiry. We didn’t really have a focus for what to look at in the video or how to assess the student work. It was clear that the students did fine once they had a procedure, and they eventually got to the terms, but from Katie’s reflection of the scenario it was painful getting to that point. We were both all for inquiry, but we decided that this wasn’t the place to go for an all out student led inquiry, but that doing the same procedure with more teacher guidance would be a better way to get the same result. By doing this we were able to pair down our list of reactions and simplifying the objective for the students. We moved to a procedure that involved students moving through stations, allowing them to see examples of endo/exothermic reactions but with considerable more structure. Looking back I’m really glad we made this decision, but I wish we would have had more direction or focus when looking at all of the documents. I think if we had had more direction we would have been better able to recognize other issues that could have been addressed. We really didn’t know how to analyze any of our evidence. Although I think we still would have ended up abandoning that lesson in the end, I think it would have ended in a better state that we were happier with.
