05 fall - holly and katie
endothermic/ exothermic reactions

This workshop was all about energy. We spent one days working with physics concepts and one day working on chemistry concepts. Thinking of physics vs. chemists energy was pretty frustrating. They asked us to lump into one category (and then basically ignore) all of the energy categories that chemists usually separate while we were trying to do the physics activity. However, we did eventually get to the chemistry and found some useful things for our lesson study. In particular, modeling provided us with the vocabulary for talking about the differences between energy, heat and temperature. It also specifically addresses the ways in which energy can be used (to raise the temperature, to change the phase, and/or to break and form chemical bonds. We ended up making some revisions to our lesson study. In particular it helped us clarify the concepts we needed to discuss with students prior to starting our lesson. We incorporated energy charts into our lesson study as a way of keeping track of where energy was coming from and going to.
