04 Summer - zach and heather
systems

In the summer of 2004 we began our lesson study by choosing to design a lesson about defining systems. Since neither of us had taught or had any real experience with our state physics curricula we thought that this would be an appropriate topic. While understanding systems and system boundaries is an extremely important part of science, we now realize that it is a very complex and far reaching understanding that is better developed over time within the context of other content rather than within a stand alone lesson. In other words, we had lots of ridiculous ideas that summer that didn't really pan out once we got into a real classroom (like trying to get to the idea of energy conservation through matchstick rockets).
